Factors That Affect Alcohol Absorption
- Food: Eating before or during drinking slows gastric emptying and reduces peak BAC by up to 50%. High-fat and high-protein foods are most effective at slowing absorption.
- Carbonation: Carbonated mixers (soda water, tonic, champagne) increase the rate of alcohol absorption and can raise peak BAC faster.
- Rate of consumption: The liver can process approximately one standard drink per hour. Drinking faster than this rate will increase peak BAC significantly.
- Medications: Many common medications interact with alcohol: antihistamines, benzodiazepines, opioids, and sleep aids all potentiate alcohol's CNS depressant effects.
- Sleep deprivation: Being tired significantly amplifies the subjective effects of alcohol — you will feel more impaired at the same BAC when sleep-deprived.

Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is the concentration of alcohol in the bloodstream, expressed as a percentage (g/dL). A BAC of 0.08% means there are 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 mL of blood. In most countries, a BAC of 0.08% (80 mg/dL) is the legal limit for driving. At 0.10% BAC, coordination is significantly impaired; at 0.15%, standing and walking are difficult; at 0.30%, loss of consciousness is likely.
This calculator uses the Widmark formula, developed by Swedish scientist Erik Widmark in 1932 and still widely used in forensic science: BAC = (A / (r × Bw)) − (β × t). Where A = total alcohol consumed in grams, r = body water constant (0.73 for men, 0.66 for women), Bw = body weight in grams, β = alcohol metabolism rate (0.015% per hour), and t = time since first drink in hours. The formula accounts for body weight, sex-based differences in body water percentage, and alcohol metabolism over time.
The liver metabolizes alcohol at a roughly fixed rate of approximately 0.015% BAC per hour (equivalent to approximately one standard drink per hour for most people). This rate cannot be significantly accelerated by coffee, food, cold showers, or time. If your BAC is 0.10%, it will take approximately 6.7 hours to reach zero (0.10 / 0.015 = 6.7 hours). BAC can be detected in breath and blood for up to 24 hours, and in urine for 12–48 hours depending on consumption.
Women typically reach higher BAC than men after consuming the same amount of alcohol due to: lower average body water content (about 52% vs. 61% in men) — alcohol distributes only in body water, not fat; lower average body weight; and lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase (the enzyme that begins metabolizing alcohol in the stomach). The Widmark formula accounts for this difference using different water constants for men (r=0.73) and women (r=0.66).
A "standard drink" in the US contains approximately 14 grams of pure alcohol. This equals: 12 oz regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz distilled spirits (40% ABV / 80-proof). Standard drink sizes vary by country: in the UK it is 8g of alcohol; in Australia, 10g; in Japan, 20g. This calculator uses actual drink parameters (volume and ABV%) for precision, rather than requiring you to count standard drinks.
Many factors affect BAC beyond what this calculator can capture: food consumption (eating slows alcohol absorption by 50–80%); drinking speed (rapid consumption produces higher peak BAC); carbonated mixers (increase absorption rate); medications (many interact with alcohol metabolism); liver health (liver disease slows metabolism); tolerance (does not lower actual BAC, only the perceived effects); and hydration status. This is why BAC calculators are estimates — individual variation is substantial.
