What Is Ideal Weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a statistical estimate of a healthy weight for a given height and sex. These formulas were originally developed for clinical use — primarily for calculating medication dosages based on lean body mass — not as fitness prescriptions. In practice, they serve as a useful starting point for setting a realistic weight goal.

It is important to understand that these formulas do not account for body composition. A highly muscular person may have a "healthy" weight above the formula estimates while actually having low body fat — and that is perfectly appropriate.

The Four Ideal Weight Formulas

Devine Formula (1974)

The most widely used ideal body weight formula in clinical medicine, particularly for drug dosing. Male: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Robinson Formula (1983)

A refinement of the Devine formula with a slightly lower per-inch increment. Male: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet. Female: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Miller Formula (1983)

Tends to produce the highest estimates of the four formulas. Male: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet. Female: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Hamwi Formula (1964)

One of the oldest formulas, notable for its frame size adjustment. The Hamwi baseline weight is adjusted by ±10% for small or large body frames. Male: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet. Female: 45.4 kg + 2.27 kg per inch over 5 feet.
