The Science Behind Step-Based Calorie Estimation

Walking calorie expenditure is calculated using MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values: Calories = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours). MET values for walking range from 2.0 (very slow, <2 mph) to 5.0 (brisk, 4 mph). Converting step count to time requires knowledge of stride length (estimated from height) to calculate distance, which is then divided by walking speed to get duration.
