The body fat calculator uses the US Navy method — one of the most accessible and widely validated body fat estimation techniques. Developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984, it requires only a tape measure and has been shown to estimate body fat percentage within ±3–4% of DEXA scan results for most people.
What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of fat tissue. The remaining percentage — everything except fat — is your lean body mass (LBM), which includes muscle, bone, water, organs, and connective tissue.
Unlike BMI, which uses only height and weight, body fat percentage directly reflects your actual body composition. This makes it a more meaningful metric for tracking fitness progress, assessing health risk, and personalizing nutrition targets.
How to Use This Calculator
To get an accurate reading, you will need a flexible tape measure (ideally a soft tailor's tape):
- Height: Measure without shoes, standing straight against a wall.
- Weight: Weigh yourself first thing in the morning after using the bathroom, before eating or drinking.
- Waist: Measure at the narrowest point (usually at or just above the navel). Stand relaxed — do not suck in. Measure at the end of a normal exhale.
- Neck: Measure just below the Adam's apple (larynx), with the tape sloping slightly downward at the front.
- Hip (women only): Measure at the widest point of the hips/buttocks.
How We Calculate Body Fat
This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method (Hodgdon & Beckett, 1984). The formulas are:
Male: Body Fat % = 495 ÷ [1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)] − 450
Female: Body Fat % = 495 ÷ [1.29579 − 0.35004 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log₁₀(height)] − 450
All measurements used in these formulas are in centimeters. The formula accounts for the natural difference in fat distribution between males and females — women carry more subcutaneous fat at the hip, which is why hip measurement is required for the female formula.
